The Nintendo Wii Launch Story
November 19th marked the launch of Nintendo’s newest console, the Wii. After finishing in last place in the most recent “console war” with the GameCube, with the PlayStation 2 finishing first, followed by the XBOX in second, Nintendo looks to rebound and regain its place as the number one console maker in the world. The Nintendo Wii definitely has a good chance. The launch success of a console does not always determine the overall success of the console, but it sure does answer many questions.
Information about the Nintendo Wii was first announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in 2005. Little was known about the system at that time, but Nintendo made it very clear that they planned to stay in the console wars for some time to come. This came after much speculation that Nintendo would bow out of future console making to focus all its attention and resources on its new handheld, the DS. Continue reading
Gaming Console Wars: Xbox, PS3 and Wii
The Xbox 360 had a year’s head start on its competition in the seventh generation console war, and that served Microsoft well. We all know a year is just too damn long for a serious gamer to wait, and they certainly gained market share because of it, at least in Europe and North America. But now that the shiny new consoles are out, is the 360 starting to look a bit shabby?
To start with, it has to be said that all three consoles – the 360, the PS2, and Nintendo’s Wii – have their dedicated fanbois who won’t change their minds for anything, even fact. These diehard fans do matter, simply because their spend on gaming is probably worth a fair few families of casual gamers. And all these consoles obviously and significantly outperform their predecessors. None of them blow. Continue reading
How To Get A Wii From Your Parents
Your parents are not out to get you. It may seem, at times, as though every aspect of their existence is devoted to making yours horrible. But the odds are strongly against it and because of that, there are some things you can do to get that very precious Nintendo Wii from them as a gift.
Playstation 3 vs. XBox 360
There are many individuals out there who are confused about which new gaming system they should buy. Many are stuck between the Playstation 3 and the XBox 360. I am here to tell you that while both are great systems; the Playstation 3 is by far the best choice. Both are comparable in price, so that is not a factor to consider in making your decision. An important issue to consider is the warranty of the products. Playstation 3 offers a full one year warranty while the XBox 360 only offers a 90 warranty.
The first thing you need to know is that the graphics on the Playstation 3 are awesome! I have never seen anything like it. Both the Playstation 3 and the XBox 360 offer 512 MB of memory. The XBox uses the Unified Memory Architecture, allowing the CPU and GPU to share that memory. The Playstation 3 offers 256 MB of XDR memory and 256 MBMB of GDDR3 memory that is specific to graphics. The bandwidth is similar on both systems.
Find Refurbished xBox 360
If you’re thinking about buying an xBox 360, you might have noticed that you can save money by buying a “refurbished” xBox. Sometimes the price difference is pretty significant. You may be wondering what exactly a refurbished system is, and why it’s so much cheaper.
A refurbished xBox 360 is one that has been pre-owned, but unlike a regular used system, it has been tested by the manufacturers to make sure everything works properly. They use the exact same technology to check a refurbished system as they do a new system. So, if you get one that’s refurbished, that means that it should theoretically be up to the same standards as a brand new model.
Here are a few examples of used and refurbished Xbox 360′s available on eBay:

The New Nintendo Wii
As of November 19th, 2006, the “next-generation” console wars have officially been renamed to the “current-generation” console wars. November 19th marked the release of the Wii, Nintendo’s newest console. This came only two days after Sony launched its PlayStation 3 on the 17th. The Wii’s release has gamers the world over excited about gaming.
Nintendo is back for another round of the console wars with its Wii (pronounced “we”). After failing to meet expectations with the GameCube, Nintendo has changed its focus and is taking console gaming into a brand new direction. With the Wii, Nintendo aims to attract not only the hardcore gamers, but non-gamers as well. It may sound crazy, but if the recent overwhelming success of its handheld system the DS Lite is any indication, Nintendo may be on to something. Continue reading
Xbox 360: An Introduction
The successor to Microsoft’s Xbox, the Xbox 360 was the first of the seventh generation consoles to come onto the market. It offers a considerable increase in performance over its predecessors, with an emphasis on convergence – moving towards being your complete home entertainment center, not ‘just’ a game console.
Convergence can be a bad thing. Nintendo’s Wii, for instance, does one thing and does it very well. That doesn’t mean the 360 is the gaming equivalent of that combination toaster /digital camera/mp3 player. As well as a quality gaming experience, a fully kitted out Xbox 360 is a DVD player, a web browser, a chat room, a webcam, and, erm, a digital camera and mp3 player.
Let’s talk specs. The Xbox 360′s Xenon CPU clocks at 3.2 gigahertz and has a reputed top performance of 115.2 gigaflops. The GPU is an ATI-chip called Xenos. The package contains two separate silicon dies, each on a chip capable of 500 MHz. The CPU and GPU share 512 meg of 700 megahertz GDDR3 RAM. The 12x DVD drive can read at sixteen MB a second, leaving the PS3′s 4.5 in the dust. So it looks pretty and goes fast. In practical terms, the 360 is good at lighting, particle, and blur effects. It’s not being outperformed in speed or graphics quality by the PS3.
The 360 can support up to four wireless controllers at once, as well as the accompanying headsets, and allows free roam within thirty feet of the console. It’s made for HDTV and six-channel Dolby surround sound – it doesn’t just support them, the games actually benefit from having them.
Every Xbox 360 comes with silver-level membership to Xbox Live. Upgrading to Gold for about US$50 a year gets you access to online-only content, world-wide tournaments, game downloads at the Arcade, live chat and networking – a whole social experience. With the success of MMORPG-style online gaming over the last few years, it’s no surprise that Microsoft have put so much emphasis on their online content. Just having been around for longer makes Xbox Live a richer experience than the competitor’s equivalents.
And just as Microsoft is constantly adding new downloads and releasing new accessories, they’re promising to take Xbox Live a step further with Live Anywhere. Demonstrated at the last E3, this will allow Xbox gaming cross-platform, onto PCs and mobile phones. Microsoft are promising that both Shadowrun and Halo 2:Vista will be Live Anywhere enabled. What that actually means in practical terms remains to be seen.
The Xbox 360 is in many ways a typical Microsoft product. It’s generally solid, but unexciting. It delivers a competent and rewarding experience, but there’s none of the innovative risk-taking seen with the Wii. It’s had bursts of widely-publicised serious technical problems, and Microsoft’s service and public relations for the Xbox seems to be on a par with that for their PC products. It should be surprising that Microsoft haven’t put more effort into making it backwards-compatible with more of the original Xbox’s games. It isn’t. There’s a rumour that Microsoft sent out the compulsory Fall Update to deliberately brick modded consoles. Whether that’s true or not, it has a horrible believability about it.
Still, none of those things have stopped people using Windows. The Xbox 360, as long as it doesn’t blue-screen, is pretty reliable, with just a slight tendency to over-heat with protracted use. The peripherals are all solidly built. There’s a huge range of good-quality games available, and a year after release, the 360 still looks pretty and runs well.
What is the PS3?
The Sony Playstation 3 is the hottest item on the market right now. Thousands of individuals are searching for them to purchase as a Christmas gift. Most retail stores throughout the United States only received a handful. People were reported lining up outside these stores the night before to get their hands on one. Some stores choose to give each person who showed up the day they were released a ticket. Then they drew numbers. Those with the lucky tickets had the privilege of purchasing the Playstation 3 system.
For those who were not lucky to purchase one from a retailer, it is going to cost you to get one elsewhere. There are ads in the newspapers offering them for sale. Online auction sites including Ebay and Yahoo Auctions are selling them like hotcakes. The opening bids are several hundred dollars more than the system costs retail. For those parents who don’t want disappointed children come Christmas morning, the cost is not an issue. Many gaming enthusiasts are also trying their hardest to obtain the new Playstation 3.
