Sony Corp. seems to have adopted a new strategy for better game software development. It is looking to encourage independent designers to create games for the PS3. With this in mind, Sony has halved the charge for the software development kit for the PS3.
According to sources, the PS3 development package cost is now only USD 10,250 in North America, 950,000 yen in Japan and Euro 7,500 in Europe.
In addition, earlier to this move, Sony had announced price cuts to the benefit of the consumers. In the past, Sony’s PS2 had dominated the gaming console market. The PS3 however is struggling against Nintendo’s Wii.
It is very important for Sony to sell PS3’s. The reason is that Sony’s next generation video- the Blu-ray disc that is competing with the HD-DVD format is supported by the PS3. Wii has seen heavy sales with an innovative remote and even elderly clients.
According to Sony, the price cuts have led to increased sales. The Wii has announced no retaliatory price cuts.
The sophistication of the PS3 makes it more difficult to make games for it. This is what has led to Sony’s latest move to encourage game making for the PS3.
