This october, video game harware and software sales have crossed the billion dollar mark to reach 1.1 billion dollars. Last year the sales were 643 million dollars in October. The Nintendo Wii was the top selling video game console.

519,000 Wiis were sold in October, 366,000 Xbox’s and 121000 PS3’s. Microsofts Halo 3 had propelled it to become the highest selling console in September.

The coming holiday season is expected to see half the year’s sales. Nintendo is hard pressed to meet demand. Microsoft is harping upon the fact that their software sales for October are greater than the Wii and PS3 combined. Microsoft’s cheapest model has seen strong sales. Meanwhile Sony has had price drops which have resulted in a steep rise in PS3 sales.

The highest sales for a single console game came from Microsofts Xbox 360 compatible Halo 3. It sold 433,800 copies. However the highest overall sales belonged to Activision’s Guitar Hero 3. In just 6 days it sold a combined 1.4 million copies across all three consoles and the older PS2. It has established itself as one of the most playable games of all time.

To recap, October has been an eventful month for video game hardware and software makers. It saw 1.1 billion in sales for these companies. The Nintendo Wii regained its ranking as the best selling video game console company. Halo 3 was the highest selling game on one console and Guitar Hero 3 was the highest selling game across consoles.
